Metin Otomotiv was incorporated by Mr. Mustafa Göbülük in 1974 at Taksim district of Istanbul, under the name Metin Ticaret Kollektif Şirketi. Marketing of automotive spare parts was a family business for approximately half a century. In 1984 the company expanded to manufacturing to meet ever increasing demands. Mr. Metin Göbülük started a workshop of 200 m² at IMES Industrial Park located in Yukarı Dudullu district of Istanbul in 1986 to make automotive parts of powder metal, almost all of the machines and equipment of the workshop had been built by the company itself, a tradition still continues.

In time the workshop turned into factory, and moved to its own building covering an outdoor area of 10,000 m² and an indoor area of 3,600 m², located at Tepeören Industrial Park in Tuzla, Istanbul, in 1999. It sets an example in its sector thanks to its principle of not only working to make profit, but also respecting researchers and the environment, being aware of the fact that the local resources are limited.

Research and Development Works

Metin Otomotiv A.Ş. manufactured all kinds of ferrous and non-ferrous powder metal parts until 1996 when its Board of Directors resolved to conduct researches on carbon brushes and self-lubricated sinter bearings; the said resolution would be a turning point.

The company began to develop alternative products for electro-graphite brushes in 1997, and made its first resin-bound graphite. Then it decided to conduct research and development works on a brush which could have properties similar to those of electro-graphite brushes on the one hand, and which could be manufactured by employing an energy cost-effective method. The prototype brushes were made in mid-1997 and installed on a low-current, high-speed A.C. motor.

Marketing of the products

The company meets 40% of the local market’s overall demand of metal-graphite brushes under the trademark Karbomet®, and approximately 40% of the overall demand of self-lubricated sinter bearings under the trademark Metinburç®. Its customers include such domestic original part suppliers as Otoyol and Opar, and such end-users as the Turkish Armed Forces. The company exports too, especially its heavy-duty metal-graphite brushes are sought and favored in the Middle East and African markets.
